What does the Air Force do? A Guide to Barksdale AFB Housing & US Military Branches

Have you ever been to an Air and Space Show at a military base before? You know, the ones with the exciting displays of fighter planes overhead? If you have, you may have heard the Air Force song that begins “Off we go into the wild blue yonder,…”1 There’s an adventurous quality to the song and to the battle of the skies that’s simply indescribable. Of course, we definitely appreciate all the work everyone in our armed forces does to protect our country. In this post, we’ll talk about the different branches of the United States military and explain how our Barksdale AFB housing can help service members in the Bossier City area.

What are the branches of the military in the United States?

What does the Air Force do? A Guide to Barksdale AFB Housing and US Military BranchesTraditionally, there are five main branches of the military in the United States. But did you know that there’s now a brand-new branch, called the US Space Force, that just became official the end of 2019?2 Yep, it’s true!

Let’s get back to our discussion about the other branches, though. These include:

  • The United States Navy. If you’ve served in the Navy, you’ve definitely had a chance to get your sea legs. That’s because armed forces in the Navy spend a large portion of their time traveling the oceans to protect our country and to provide support as needed to other branches of the military (such as the Marines or Air Force).3
  • Of course, the US Army plays a major part in fighting for our nation’s freedom as well. Service members in the Army typically fight on-land battles throughout the world to support our allies and help us win wars. The Army is the largest branch of the US military.
  • The Marine Corps is an elite branch of the military that performs special tasks in warfare to strategically win battles. All armed forces are dedicated to our country, but the Marines are especially committed to the military lifestyle.
  • The Coast Guard is also a branch of the military and serves the United States by assisting civilians in ocean rescues as well as enforcement of our waterways surrounding the nation.
  • Last but not least, there’s the US Air Force. Men and women serving in the Air Force obviously perform duties relating to protection of our airways. By means of access to the skies, Air Force personnel are quickly able to reach many locations around the world to fight or protect as needed.4 This is one of the newer divisions in the military (before the Space Force) and didn’t officially come into existence until after World War II, in 1947.3
