Save money on museum costs while on-the-road & staying at travel nurse housing

As costs continue to rise in the United States, consumers will need to look for ways to save money at home and while on-the-go. For travelers who frequently leave their home base for work, price hikes will be keenly felt. In this post, we’ll focus on some discounted / free museums in the Shreveport area as well as some options for saving money on admission fees. Of course, one of the best ways to save while traveling is to stay in fully furnished travel nurse housing…read on and we’ll explain why!

Shreveport and Beyond: Want to Save but Still Have Fun?

Here are some options to consider as you determine what to do on your days / weekends off from work at nearby Willis-Knighton Medical Center or another local hospital.

  • The Louisiana State Exhibit Museum is free! They’ve been closed for renovations, so visit their website and / or call for more information to make sure the museum is open.
  • The Marlene Yu Museum offers free days every once in a while. General admission is regularly $10 a person, but sign up for the e-newsletter for updates on when they offer a free day. Service members can also get half off admission, so if you’re here in Shreveport LA to work on the base and stay in Barksdale AFB housing, show your ID card to get a discount.
  • Ask the museum you visit if they offer a discount for AAA members. They may not, but it’s worth asking! Also, if you don’t have a AAA membership, you need to get one!
  • The Shreveport Water Works Museum is a National Historic Landmark, so you don’t want to miss a visit while you’re staying in town. This special piece of history also offers free admission! They are open six days a week…closed on Mondays.
  • Guess what?! Spring Street Historical Museum also offers free admission! Walk back in time to the mid-1800s and see what it was like to live and work before the twentieth century.
  • General admission costs for adults at the Sci-Port Discovery Center run $15 per person. If you have a group of more than 10 people, you can schedule a visit at a reduced group rate. Another great way to save on admission is to become a member of the ASTC Travel Passport Program. This program is designed specifically for travelers who enjoy visiting science centers out-of-town! The Sci-Port Discovery Center currently should be on their list of included museums, but you’ll need to keep several exclusions in mind – you can’t get an ASTC discount on any museum within 90 miles (flight distance) from where you’re a member or from your primary residence. Other than that, ASTC is seriously a great option. Read more on their site for the full details.
