Personal safety tips when away from temporary housing for travel nurses

The allure of traveling appeals to many, but comes with its own set of benefits and challenges. One of the benefits of travel is the opportunity to experience new places, eat amazing food and meet new people. However, personal safety is a very important factor when making travel plans…or even when running errands around town. Keep reading to learn about some crucial security tips that can help anyone, including those staying in temporary housing for travel nurses.

Solo travelers need to remember to stay informed to stay safe

In previous posts, we discussed workplace safety tips for nurses as well as security at home when at your travel nurse housing rental. Now, we’ll cover the topic of personal safety when you’re out exploring a new city on your days or weekends off. Some things to keep in mind whenever you leave your home include:

  • When going somewhere at night, try to park in an area that’s well lit with street lamps or in a lighted garage. This will make you feel safer because you’ll be able to see potential criminals from further away.
  • Carry a small protective device such as Mace, which you should only use in case of true duress.
  • Keep the “Run, Hide, Fight” mentality in mind if you ever have to face a situation someplace with an active shooter. Essentially, this means that if you are aware of a shooter in the area, then run to get away as fast as possible. If this doesn’t work or you can’t run away, find the best possible place to hide and protect yourself. Finally, if / when this doesn’t work anymore, then fight the person.
  • Keep track of your belongings when shopping etc and don’t keep lots of valuables with you.
  • Lock your car doors whenever you leave the car and keep your keys in your hand when you walk back out to your vehicle.
  • When leaving the rental, let someone know how long you’re planning to be gone and (generally-speaking) where you’ll be going. This can be more difficult when living alone or far away from family, but it still can be helpful because it alerts a loved one to your last possible location(s). Simply send a quick text message or something simple.
