This isn’t a drill! For service members, moving can be a common occurrence, but it still can come with a lot of stress. In this post, we’ll discuss some potential stress factors. We’ll also explain how our Barksdale AFB housing can help reduce your stress when relocating to Louisiana. One reason? Stay with us and you’re renting directly from the owner!
Take care of your body when preparing for a PCS move
In a previous post, we talked about ways to pack and prepare for a PCS move. This included a discussion of simplifying your household items, considering children during a move and an emphasis on the need for lots of organization.Today, we’ll cover another aspect of frequent moving…the emotional and physical toll it can take.
- First, moving is physically tiring. Taking boxes in and out of vehicles and / or up and down the stairs is exhausting and can cause back pain if you have to lift heavy objects. Hire help if needed and figure out what your entitlements will specifically include from the military.
- Moving also takes brain power to decide what to take and what to leave or give away. This is especially hard if you’re tired from a long workday or from caring for the kids.
- Moving takes patience with yourself and with family members when things need to get done on a time crunch and you’re not getting them done fast enough. Try to avoid meltdowns and take a walk if you just need a few minutes away from the packing stresses.
- When preparing for a move, factor in the time, energy and clear communication you’ll need to invest with friends and family you’re leaving behind. Tears may happen!
- As a service member, you may worry about how you will adapt to a new Air Force Base…can you make new friends, get along with your superiors, adjust to different weather and work routines? Try not to focus on these future things, but only on what you can get done now.
- If you’re moving with a significant other, you may also worry about how your loved one will adjust and if he / she can find a job, new friend community etc.
- Likewise, if you move with children, you’ll definitely be concerned about how your kids will handle being uprooted and replanted in a different school. Kids also can be more sensitive about change and will take extra energy from you / your significant other to soothe and reassure them that everything will be okay in their new home.
