In this blog post, we’ll discuss an important question that each service member must determine as he or she figures out where to live on a new temporary duty assignment. In essence, who is required to live on-base and who can live in Barksdale AFB housing off-base? The short answer? It’s complicated.
What’s your rank?
One of the biggest factors that can determine if you’re required to live on or off-base is your rank. Lower-ranking (junior enlisted) Airmen may be required to live on base in the provided dormitory space. Other factors besides rank that will weigh into whether you get authorization for off-base housing include…- Whether the base is located in the United States or overseas
- What branch of the military you’re serving in. The Army, Navy etc have separate rank requirements than the Air Force
- Where the geographic location of the base is…this affects how much you’ll receive for the Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH)
- Whether you’re serving in an essential military role or not
- Whether or not you’re married or have dependents. If you’re living in a different location than your spouse or dependents, you may still benefit from BAH assistance
- Whether housing is limited on base or readily available
- How long you’ve served in the military
- How many personal items you’re planning to bring with you
