We’ve covered the “moving and packing” topic in other blog posts before, such as one about choosing a good suitcase or another post with ideas for car essentials you may need while on the road. This post, however, will specifically discuss the methodology behind packing the items in a vehicle and the best way to efficiently make this happen in the best possible way. That’s because loading a vehicle for travel is kind-of like putting together a jigsaw puzzle!

  • The first and best method for ensuring that you get everything packed is to…bring less!! Yep, the less items you “have to have”, the less stress you’ll put on yourself and on anyone assisting with the move. This is especially helpful for frequent travelers such as travel nurses or military families needing Barksdale AFB Housing.
  • Put the biggest and most important items in your car first to ensure that you have room for them. The smaller items will fit in between these larger items.
  • Use heavy-duty plastic bags to pack clothing and any soft items. Boxes take more room and you’ll be surprised how much more you can fit into your car if you use bags! Of course, be sure to use high-quality garbage bags or something that won’t easily break and cause your clothes to spill all over the parking lot. If you’re really wanting to maximize space, consider vacuum bags that shrink down to small squares when the air is removed.
  • If you’re traveling a long distance to your new assignment, take time to pack a backpack with the overnight essentials you’ll need for several days. As you load the car, be sure to put this backpack within close reach. When you stop en route for the night, you can easily access your toothbrush etc instead of unloading everything!
  • If you simply don’t have enough room in your vehicle, then invest in an overhead luggage carrier. Or, if you have a trailer hitch, get a cargo carrier to extend the back of your vehicle. Make sure that you aren’t breaking any road laws in the states you’re traveling through (since the length of your carrier may be regulated).
  • Pack related items together. This will make your job MUCH easier when unloading. Also label everything so you don’t have to open lots of bags to find the one you’re looking for.
