A well-packed suitcase isn’t just about bringing less; it’s also about choosing well. Here are a few suggestions…

  • Select clothes that don’t wrinkle easily. This will make it easier when you do laundry (since you won’t have to iron as much) and means you can simply grab clothes in the morning and go.
  • Items that fade or “bleed color” shouldn’t be part of your wardrobe. Instead, choose non-fade or pre-washed fabrics for maximum success. Look on the labels to help you determine what to bring.
  • Plan out what tops and bottoms go together and think through colors that might coordinate or clash. Select outfits that easily can mix-and-match. For example, think neutrals like grays and blacks with a pop of color.
  • Don’t leave the house without comfy clothes! As already mentioned, you’ll have more fun in the car if you plan to wear outfits that are comfortable. This also means that you need to bring lots of layers…a mix of short-sleeve and long-sleeve shirts are a must. Consider bringing a rain jacket and light coat as well.
  • Pack shirts and pants or dresses that are versatile and can be easily dressed up or down.
  • Traveling with pets? As a pet owner, you know that dog or cat hair is a real thing! Make your life less stressful by wearing clothes that don’t show or attract animal fur.
  • Similar to lots of layers – have some short-sleeve, long-sleeve, rain jacket and coat options
  • Your feet (and whole body!) will love you if you bring the right shoes. Be willing to sacrifice style a little bit if necessary to ensure that your footwear is suitable for lots of walking, is well-fitted and easy to take off and on.
  • Don’t forget to protect your face with a hat. This is especially helpful if you plan to sightsee or enjoy a lot of outdoor activities while in Louisiana.
  • Purchase a backpack or wallet / bag that protects your credit cards with RFiD blocking.

Of course, as a serviceperson for the Air Force, you will receive military uniforms to wear while on duty. Thus, the list above is primarily for your off-duty relaxation and any walks with your dog in the park.
