How to take medications on the go to new travel nurse housing rentals

As a healthcare professional, you know that medications are an important component in a patient’s overall care. But what about your own prescription or over-the-counter needs? In this post, we’ll discuss some tips for effective and efficient travel with medications. We’ll also go over our travel nurse housing rentals and explain some major benefits for renting our Shreveport, Louisiana condos.

Don’t be left without the care you need!

As a nurse, it’s easy to focus on the care of your patients and forget about your own self-care. But it’s critical to make sure you get the right food, exercise, sleep etc that’s necessary. Your personal medication needs are part of this picture. Traveling nurses have many extra concerns that go with living in temporary locations throughout the year. After all, you won’t have easy, in-person access to your personal physician like other people do! As such, here are some tips…

  • Talk to your primary physician about your work and how long / often you’re traveling. If your health is affected by climate, discuss the specific destinations you’re headed to as well. Ask him or her what the process would be to refill any prescriptions while away from home and if that’s possible. You may be able to obtain all your meds before you leave, but this answer may depend on your insurance and what your provider will cover.1
  • Use a pharmacy that has many locations around the USA. This will make it much, much easier to get your prescriptions.
  • For over-the-counter medications, you may consider buying in bulk. This ensures that you’ll have what you need in a new location. Just make sure that the pills don’t have expiration dates in the near future.
  • Keep any meds in the original packaging. Yes, it will take more space, but if you fly to your destination, this helps with getting through TSA security at the airport. It can also help you if you need visual reference as to what meds are what and any instructions as to when / how to take the medication.
  • Take photos of all your prescriptions and bring these digital and printed copies along with you. Keep your doctor’s phone number and any other relevant contact info you may need away from home. If you’re susceptible to anaphylactic shock, make sure you have an EpiPen or two with you at all times and any relevant instructions as well.
