One huge way to help protect yourself against accidental fire is to be careful of your surroundings! In addition, you’ll want to keep these recommendations in mind…

  • If you’re making dinner in your fully equipped kitchen, don’t leave food on the stovetop unattended. Check to make sure you’ve turned off the range or the stove when you’re done. Be careful to keep flammable items like kitchen towels, oven mitts and clothing far away from the stove or other hot surfaces.
  • In addition, it’s a good idea to keep flammable bed linens, towels and clothes away from heating devices in your rental. This includes vents and any portable plug-in heaters.
  • Please check with our owner, Debi, before using any candles in your fully furnished rental. She will be able to tell you whether you can use candles or not. A safer alternative that offers similar ambience are flameless candles!
  • There is a no smoking policy in the rentals.
  • Each Barksdale AFB housing unit will come equipped with a smoke detector, carbon monoxide detector and a fire extinguisher on the premises. Do you know how to use each of these tools? Take time to familiarize yourself with each of them. Do an internet search for “how to use a fire extinguisher” and watch a video or two. Make sure to test the detectors regularly to ensure that they work. If you have any questions, ask your landlord and also get in touch with her if you hear a beeping sound from the detector (this indicates low battery).
  • Are you rooming with someone else in your short term rental? If so, make an escape plan together and figure out where you both will meet after safely getting off the property. Who will make sure the pets get outside? Who will call for help? Do your own fire drill to test your readiness for an emergency.
