Say what? If you’re new to the south, we sometimes like to use some French phrases in our everyday language. Essentially, “Laissez les bon temps rouler” means “Let the good times roll”! Sounds good to us!

If you want to party it up on Shrove Tuesday itself, there are a variety of events you can participate in or attend, including the Fat Tuesday Children’s Parade. That’s not the only parade in town, though! Head to the Walmart on East Bert Kouns Industrial Loop for another Fat Tuesday Parade and a Food Truck Festival.

Another way to get into the spirit of the season? Drop by a local restaurant that’s literally called “Fat Tuesday Sandwich Shop and Bakery“! The company offers Po Boy sandwiches as well as King Cakes and other burger and salad offerings. Of course, it doesn’t have to be Mardi Gras season for you to visit this shop, but St Joseph Catholic Church is hosting an amazing one-night only event on February 13, 2024 that you don’t want to miss! Get your ticket to the Fat Tuesday Dinner Event with The Shreveport Opera. You’ll enjoy some cajun delicacies and listen to incredible opera music at the same time.

But what exactly is “Shrove Tuesday”? How do pancakes relate to the day? According to Wikipedia, the word “shrove” comes from another word, “shrive”, which means absolve (receive forgiveness for sins).1 The day is celebrated with feasts and fattening foods (like pancakes) because it’s the last day before Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent.

Hmm, all this talk has made pancakes sound pretty delicious, right?! Check out an IHOP Restaurant for their rendition of the special Mardi Gras day…aka National Pancake Day!
