Nursing is a noble profession. It requires a lot of physical stamina (long work days) as well as mental and emotional strength to handle the stresses of making tough decisions in close contact with hurting patients. Naturally, it makes sense that nurses spend years of training to help gain the skills needed to work in a hospital or other medical setting. In this post, we’ll discuss the licenses that travel nurses in particular may be required to get. We’ll also cover the travel nurse housing topic and explain why fully furnished housing is the best way to go.
What kind of licensing do I need?
Your primary state of residence (PSOR) is a big deal when it comes to traveling for work as a nurse. That’s because the eNLC (enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact) is making many RN licenses much more portable. Sadly, this doesn’t apply to every state in the US, but according to the Nurse.org website, 39 states are part of this legislation. This changes on a regular basis, so check back often! As far as PSOR, this will be a big determining factor in whether you can apply for what’s called a “compact license” or “multistate license”. You’ll have to make sure your home state participates in the eNLC and that the license you have qualifies as a multistate license. Of course, you can work in a non eNLC state, but the licensing process will be more difficult.
Thankfully, Louisiana is part of the eNLC as of 2018. When you come to Shreveport from another eNLC participating state, the necessary prep work before the temporary move will be a lot easier!

- The NCSBN website (National Council of State Boards of Nursing) has a very helpful FAQ section on the Nurse Licensure Compact.
Of course, please speak with your travel nurse staffing agency to verify the exact requirements for licensure that affect you and the work assignments you’re considering. In another future post, we’ll talk about additional certifications that medical staff such as yourself may need to have.
