As we’ve already discussed in a previous post, smartphones are a nurse’s best friend…especially if you are on the road often for work! When family and close friends are far away, there’s something very comforting about a device that gives quick access to the voice of a loved one. In this post, we discuss three possible options health professionals should consider if looking for a new phone plan. We’ll also cover some reasons why our travel nurse housing will give you the edge you need once you arrive at our lovely Southern location.
Who should provide my cell phone service? Looking at the options…
First of all, you should ask yourself a few important questions:- As a traveling nurse, what are my goals? Do I want to travel overseas for work or stay primarily in the United States? If you’re looking to do some international travel, you’ll need a phone plan that works in many different countries. It can help to know specifically what countries you’re interested in as well, since not all plans have the same coverage maps. On the other hand, medical professionals staying mostly in the USA need to consider if they are staying in larger cities or are interested in providing more rural medical care. This can make a difference in what provider you choose as well.
- Do I have additional dependents that will use the same plan as I do? If you have children, a significant other or a family member that is going to share your plan, you’ll want enough data for everyone or a plan that gives each person their own data. There also can be price cuts for more than one person, so keep that in mind!
- Do I need a new cell phone or am I planning to keep my existing phone? Many phone service providers offer signup bonuses such as a free phone with a contract for so many years or a reduced rate if you use a prepaid plan.
- How much data am I planning to use? If you frequently use your phone to look up medical terminology or perform work-related tasks, you may need more data. In the same vein, if you use maps to get around a lot, you’ll also need to budget for more data.
Once you’ve sorted out some answers to these questions, you’ll have a better idea of what you’re looking for. Some options for service providers include:
- AT&T – Currently offers a 25% discount to nurses, doctors and physician assistants if they sign up for certain specified plan(s). Active military service members and veterans also can receive a discount, which would be helpful for Shreveport families staying in Barksdale AFB housing!
- Verizon – Provides discounts to nurses when they’ve verified their identity via an online format.
- T-Mobile – Another one of the big carriers, T-Mobile doesn’t currently offer a discount for nurses. They do have a bunch of other deals and signup bonuses.
Please keep in mind that we are providing information about these phone plans as a convenience to our current and potential tenants! We don’t specifically endorse any of companies listed.
