Here in the United States, we’re probably all pretty familiar with the term, Wi-Fi. It’s something we’ve come to expect everywhere we go…from fast food restaurants, to hotels and even a friend’s house. Connection to the internet is simple and quick. But do we really understand the risks and benefits behind Wi-Fi? If you’re a traveling construction worker, business professional or travel nurse, where should you look for houses for rent in Shreveport LA that also have a good internet connection? In this post, we’ll dive into these questions. Read on for more!
What Exactly is Wi-Fi?
According to Wikipedia, Wi-Fi is an abbreviation for the term “wireless fidelity”. If you’re old enough to remember back to the dial-up days when you’d connect to the web via a phone line, you’ll know that a wireless connection is so much simpler. And more portable! After all, with wireless internet, you can work on your laptop in the bedroom propped up on some pillows. Or, at our short term rentals, you can sit in a comfy leather recliner in front of the cable TV. Prefer to sit at a desk so you can focus on that work deadline? Each of our corporate house rentals features a desk and office chair for your comfort.
How Does WiFi Benefit You if You Already Have a Hotspot / Phone Data?
If you’re looking for corporate housing, you’re probably accustomed to frequent travel. Thus, you may have a really good phone plan with a hotspot or “unlimited” data. You might wonder if you really need a Wi-Fi enabled rental? The answer is yes! Some phone plans say that they offer unlimited data, but they actually offer a certain amount of premium data and then slow or cap your speed. How frustrating! With our houses for rent in Shreveport LA, you don’t need to worry as much about this. When you’re staying with us, you can connect your phone and other devices to the Wi-Fi included with each rental. Then, save your premium data for Google Maps or that quick break between rounds at the hospital. You know you’ll appreciate the savings!
What Can You Do with Wi-Fi?
We’ve already mentioned some of the benefits of wireless internet, but here’s a list of some more ways you may use the web.
- Pay bills
- Check email
- Watch your favorite streaming services or YouTube videos
- Check social media and share your travel experiences with friends
- Zoom / video chat with loved ones back home
- Do business work projects, which may include accessing cloud-based services such as Office 365, Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud etc
- Send documents to FedEx Office or a local printer. However, each of our rentals has an HP or Epson printer for your use so you can print many items right here!
- Surf the internet for research projects etc
- Online shopping
- and more!
Internet Security and How to Stay Safe Online
As we mentioned in a previous article on high-speed internet, two great ways you can improve your online security are as follows:
- Get a VPN (Virtual Private Network). A VPN will help to protect your traffic from being visible to your Internet Service Provider (ISP). It will also protect you from unauthorized people trying to hijack your activities online if you both are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. One option is ExpressVPN.
- Passwords are a headache, right?! So, use a password manager to help keep track of all the online passwords you need to create. This will also help so you can use unique passwords for each different account online…don’t reuse the same login for everything!
Some additional ways to protect your personal data and online security:
- Be careful what you click on when you’re surfing the web. If it looks too good to be true, it probably is. You’ll also want to avoid downloading files that are from an unknown source as they may contain malware.
- In a similar fashion, beware of emails that look like they come from reputable sources, but aren’t legitimate. For example, if you get an email about an Amazon package and it seems suspicious, log into Amazon on your own (without clicking through the email) and check on the package through your account. On an iPhone, you can check the real email address of a sender by opening the email and tapping on the “from” name of the sender at the top. Then, click on the blue name again. You should see a box that comes up with info about the real email address. Of course, if you know it’s spam, send it to the junk email folder immediately!
- If you’re looking for a privacy-forward email provider, two options are ProtonMail and Tutanota. This article compares the two email services.
- Install an extension to block ads from your screen. One option is AdBlock.
- Use a browser that’s designed with privacy in mind. Some options include Brave and Mozilla Firefox.
- Log out of any online accounts when you’re not using them. Yes, it’s a hassle, but worth it for peace of mind. This includes Facebook, Google etc. Here’s an article that explains how you can see where you’re logged in.
