What is a neighborhood, really? Loosely defined, we could say that neighbors are people who live in the same vicinity to each other…they live close by. Of course, everyone wants to have good neighbors, and it’s a very important aspect to consider when relocating to a new town permanently or for short term. In this post, we’ll discuss several areas of Shreveport-Bossier City that military service members may look at when searching for off-base Barksdale AFB housing.
Looking for off-base Barksdale AFB housing? Check out these areas of town
Of course, location is one of the most important aspects of choosing a good short term rental. That’s because you’ll want someplace that’s close to base and allows for easy access to your workplace. Who wants a short morning commute? Everybody!- Whitehurst is an area of town in Bossier City LA and is north of the base. You’ll love the accessibility here…Whitehurst is conveniently situated near US Route 79, I-20 and Interstate 220. Bossier Parish Community College is nearby and offers a full range of courses in the arts and humanities as well as associate degrees for nurses, paramedics, medical assistants etc. BPCC also gives a Certificate of Technical Studies to those completing classes such as welding, engineering graphics and more. Military spouses might enjoy taking a class or two in an area of interest as desired!
- Brookhaven Estates is just north of Whitehurst and is a subdivision that military families may consider due to its proximity to the base.
- Eastwood is one of the many suburbs of greater Shreveport and is northeast of Barksdale, off of I-20, between Haughton and Red Chute. If you’re looking for delicious pasture-raised meat and local cheeses, check out Mahaffey Farms in Eastwood. Once you’ve bought your food, take it home to your fully furnished rental and cook up a yummy dinner!
- Speaking of Haughton, this town is east of base and a great option for off-base housing. You’ll appreciate the less-than-thirty-minute drive to Barksdale’s North Gate. Haughton LA has a small-town feel with less than 5000 residents, but boasts elementary, middle and high school solutions for military families.
- In addition, several other subdivisions near the Air Force Base include Southgate Estates and Bellaire. Both of these are located along Barksdale Boulevard, a roadway with many convenient amenities for everyday life such as CVS, Walmart Neighborhood Market, Kroger, Barksdale Federal Credit Union and more. Southgate and Bellaire are south of the base.
What are the gates that Barksdale has and what are the hours?
Since you’re considering life off-base instead of living in on-base military housing, you’ll want to know how easy it is to get onto base each day for work. According to the Barksdale.AF.Mil website, there are four gates to the base.
- The West Gate is the primary entrance point and is open 24 hours, every day of the week.
- The North Gate is accessible from Northgate Road (naturally!) and is open for use during business hours on weekdays and Saturday mornings. It provides convenient access to Bossier City.
- The East Gate has similar hours to the North Gate, but isn’t open on Saturdays. This is the business entrance for larger vehicles…check the website for specific hours.
- Finally, the Bodcau Gate is located near Haughton.
That’s not all, though! Soon, there will be an updated East Gate entrance to base at the intersection of I-20 and I-220 north of Barksdale. This entrance and roadway will make it even easier to access base activities and for military personnel to commute from Barksdale AFB housing into work. The project should be completed by the end of 2025.
