Travel is exciting, right?! There’s something magical about visiting a new place and experiencing the joys of learning about a different way of life and eating delicious foods. Naturally, you’ll want to share those experiences with friends and family back home! However, is it a good idea to share travel details and pictures on social media while still on your trip? In this post, we’ll discuss some digital practices that can help you and your loved ones stay safe. We’ll also explain how our extended stay Shreveport is the ideal safe spot for resting and relaxing at the end of a day working or sightseeing!
Protect Your Valuables and Physical Safety
The short answer is…No. While traveling or away from home (especially for long periods of time), it’s best to resist the urge to post your travel details and experiences on Facebook, X, TikTok, Instagram, a personal blog or other forms of social media or online presence. Once you get back home, it’s safer to post, but even then, be mindful of how your posts may be perceived as egotistical or braggy. Check out the list below…- If possible, resist the urge to tell people online about an upcoming trip. This protects your home, valuables and any family remaining at home by not alerting people that “I won’t be home for this specific length of time!”
- Don’t use geo-tagging / addresses or location-specific details online while on your trip. This lets everyone in your circle know where you are when and makes you more vulnerable to physical harm.
- Be mindful of other people traveling with you and their safety as well. Maybe you don’t mind sharing your details online, but they may be more cautious. If needed, have a conversation with your fellow travelers to ask if it’s okay to post photos of them while you’re adventuring together. Or, just resist posting altogether!
- Similar to the above, also be considerate of strangers / acquaintances around you while you’re on your trip. Don’t take lots of pictures of strangers or fellow travelers and post photos of them (especially on a public platform) without their consent. Would you want your face plastered all over someone else’s social account? If not, treat strangers the same way. Essentially, it’s about doing unto others as you would want them to do to you. Digital privacy is a two-way street.
- Take care to protect your travel documents and personal information by refraining from posting photos of these documents online. You don’t want to share flight numbers, passport info, hotel names or other specific details that can pose a potential risk to you and loved ones if that information got into the wrong hands.
- As we’ve mentioned in previous blog posts, use a VPN (virtual private network) to protect your browsing habits while surfing the web on an insecure public Wi-Fi network. This applies to travelers in the USA and abroad. However, please take time to check on any restrictions that may apply to VPNs in the country or countries you’re visiting…VPNs are illegal in some places in the world.
- In addition, did you know that some countries have social media laws? According to Wikipedia, Facebook has been banned or censored in various overseas locations and many still have active bans in place. Make sure to check on the laws for the land you’re visiting and what is allowed or not while there.
- Of course, someone needs to know where you are while you’re gone! Consider downloading an app like Signal to share messages and photos with specific people back home. It’s important to communicate with people you trust, so don’t neglect this aspect even as you remain aware of your privacy needs while traveling.
