When traveling, you never know exactly what you’ll be dealing with on the journey ahead. For adventurous types, this is what makes travel exciting! However, exciting shouldn’t equate dangerous. As a medical professional, you know that emergency preparedness can mean life or death. In this post, we’ll discuss some items you should keep in your emergency travel kit for the car and / or to keep with you in your travel nurse housing rental.
What should go in an emergency preparedness kit?
Please remember that everyone’s travel kit will look a little different, so the items mentioned below are only a portion of the items you’ll need. You’ll want enough supplies to last several days at least.
- Water is an essential to life and survival. Pack plenty of bottled water as well as a water filtration device or purification tablets.
- Food that is high in caloric content and doesn’t require refrigeration. You can buy MRE (meals ready to eat) items from Amazon or from an outdoor supply store like Cabela’s.
- Extra batteries for your cell phone as well as batteries for flashlights or a radio.
- NOAA weather radio for staying informed about weather patterns. Don’t assume that the internet or your cell phone data will always be working…buy a battery, hand crank or solar-powered radio that’s built for your protection. Midland is one company that has a number of emergency radio options.
- Cell phone…always an essential item! But seriously, don’t forget it.
- Flashlights and candles as well as matches.
- First Aid Kit (check out the Red Cross website for info on what to include).
For more detailed information about what you should include in your emergency kit, take a look at the Ready.Gov website or one of the links mentioned in the “Sources” at the bottom of this post.
If you have babies or young children, pack supplies for their needs, such as diapers, formula or extra clothing. Check out some ideas from the CDC here.
Or, if you have pets, you’ll want to make sure and prepare a kit that includes dog / cat food, pet medications, leash, pet carrier if needed etc. The Purina website has recommendations for preparing your emergency kit.
You can also buy an emergency travel kit if you’d prefer…there are some options listed on this webpage.
Don’t forget about your vehicle as well! Be sure to bring jumper cables, a gas can, car jack and a spare tire as well as other items mentioned on this website. The American Automobile Association (AAA) is an invaluable resource for travelers and members can have their car towed if needed as part of the membership.
